The immune system is designed to protect and defend the body from disease, however, an autoimmune disease such as rheumatoid arthritis, attacks the body’s healthy tissue. In Rheumatoid arthritis, the immune system attacks the healthy tissue in the joints, causing damage and creating inflammation.

Rheumatoid arthritis is more prevalent in women than in men, with 2 to 3 women affected to every man with rheumatoid arthritis, and often occurs during a woman’s fertile years. However, the main demographic RA affects is between 40 to 70 year olds.

Rheumatoid arthritis can affect different people in different ways, the symptoms can come on gradually over time or rapidly (almost over night), it is different for each person.
