Breast cancer Introduction
Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in the world. In Australia, breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer related death in women. According to Breast Cancer Australia (www. breastcanceraustralia.org) 1 in 11 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer before the age of 75. The breast cancer incidence in Australia has risen to more than 30 percent from 1993 to 2003. In 2003, a total of 11,889 women and 101 men were diagnosed with breast cancer, with 2,710 deaths in Australia.
Breast cancer, in an early stage, usually does not show any signs of pain. This means when the cancer first develops, there may be no symptoms presented at all. But this notion can change as the cancer grows. Therefore, women should be aware of any signs of change in their breasts.
Early detection plays an important role in successful treatment of breast cancer. Regular screening and self-examination of the breasts, is highly recommended. Research also recommends that maintaining a low-fat diet can protect people from breast cancer. Although breast cancer awareness has improved dramatically in the past few years, it is still not good enough. People and the communities in general still need to be informed and aware of the benefits of early detection and self-examination. These are the key to a decrease in breast cancer mortality rate.
