Up to nine per cent of women will develop gestational diabetes between week 24 and 28 of their pregnancy because of body changes which stops insulin producing the right amounts of glucose or doesn’t keep the levels constant.??

The hormones produced by the placenta to help the baby develop and grow, block the normal insulin production and regulating processes. The increased glucose stimulates baby’s growth as well as its pancreas which produces extra insulin too. This needs to be managed well as there is risk to both mother and baby with a large baby and possibly an early delivery and low sugar levels for baby after the birth.??

But the good news is that the body usually returns to normal after the baby is born although it does increase the mother’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.
