Diabetes is a common condition and in the 2004-05 National Health Survey, 699,600 Australians were reported as having diabetes. The real figure though could be much higher because researchers believe as many as half of all those with diabetes don’t know they’ve got it. By 2010, it is estimated that 1.23 million people will have diabetes in Australia. The number of people diagnosed in Australia has doubled over the past 20 years and every day in Australia approximately 275 adults develop diabetes. Almost 1 in 4 Australians over the age of 25 has diabetes impaired sugar metabolism which is a pre-cursor to diabetes. Between 10 and 30 per cent of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians have Type II diabetes, which is about two to four times higher than the rate. Around 10% of all diabetes cases in Australia are diagnosed as type one or insulin dependant while gestational diabetes develops in between 4-9% pregnancies. The rest are people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. |
