There are some people who are especially at risk for hypertension. These are people who are obese, don't exercise, eat a diet high in salt, and who drink a lot of alcohol. It's also more likely the older we get.

People who have relatives with hypertension are also at risk, as it tends to run in families.

Taking certain medications may increase the risk of hypertension. These include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), oral contraceptives, corticosteroids and some antidepressant medications. Some experts believe that stress can contribute to hypertension, especially if the stress is prolonged.

In people with hypertension, the risk of getting atherosclerosis is higher if they also smoke, have diabetes, have higher-than-normal blood cholesterol levels, and/or a family history of atherosclerosis.
