We don't know what causes most cases of hypertension. Scientists think it's probably a combination of several factors – age, a genetic susceptibility in some people (those with a family history of it), acting together with environmental influences; things like the types of foods we eat, our intake of alcohol and medications we take. These things all influence whether we’re likely to get hypertension or not.
Nevertheless, there's no sure way of identifying who is going to get hypertension, some people with risk factors don’t get hypertension, while other people who don't have any risk factors can get hypertension.
That's why it's important to have your blood pressure taken every two years, even if you don't have any risk factors and even if it's been normal in the past.
