Since the risk factors are mainly the results of an unhealthy lifestyle, the way to prevent hypertension is to adopt a healthy lifestyle. This means losing weight, or not putting it on in the first place. You can do this by exercising regularly; thirty minutes of exercise such as swimming running, walking briskly or a gym work-out is recommend at least three to four times a week.

Nutritionists recommend eating a diet that is low in sugar, and low fats and that has little or no processed and manufactured food (which contains large amounts of fats and sugar). If you have trouble motivating yourself to lose weight, it can be a good idea to join a weight loss program.

Find out if anyone in your family has hypertension, because a family history makes it more likely. If there is a family history, you should have your blood pressure regularly checked by your doctor.
