Some exercises should be avoided by people with hypertension. These include lifting heavy weights. When exercising don’t hold your breath. It’s important to breathe during the contraction phase of the exercise. Holding the breath during a sustained muscle contraction reduces blood flowing back to the heart, decreasing the amount of blood the heart has to pump and potentially limiting the quantity of blood flowing to the brain. Remember to exhale on exertion (or lifting) and inhale on relaxation (or lowering). If you are on medications called ß-Blockers, your heart rate response to exercise may be dampened. Therefore it is best for you to monitor your workout on effort rather than by checking your heart rate. These medications may also impair thermoregulation during exercise in hot and/or humid environments; talk to your doctor about this before beginning an exercise program. |
