Menopause stages

The menopause process takes place over years. Menopause is commonly divided into the following two stages:

1.    Perimenopause: The time when a woman begins to experience menopausal signs and symptoms, even though she still menstruates. This happens because her hormone levels rise and fall unevenly, and she may have hot flushes and other symptoms. Perimenopause may last four to five years or longer.

2.    Postmenopause: Once 12 months have passed since her last period, she has officially reached her menopause. Her ovaries produce much less estrogen and no progesterone, and they don’t release any more eggs. The years that follow this final period are called postmenopause.
