Early detection of osteoporosis can prevent fractures and slow the deterioration of bone tissue.
Osteoporosis can be diagnosed via a bone mineral density test (BMD). The medical name for this test is a Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry or DEXA. T scores are the scaled result of the DEXA scan. A normal T score is higher than -1, Osteopenia (low bone density) is defined by a T score of -1 t -2.5 standard deviations. Osteoporosis is defined as greater than 2.5 standard deviations. BMDs can also help to monitor the effectiveness of treatments. Bone Mineral Density tests are a quick, non-invasive, and painless scan.
