Bone loss is a normal process of ageing and from middle age it’s estimated a loss of about one per cent each year.
Women are more at risk than men of because of the rapid bone loss with menopause caused by a decline in the production of the hormone estrogen.
Risk factors for Osteoporosis include:
- Family history of Osteoporosis
- Certain conditions and medications can increase your risk of Osteoporosis (e.g. Cortico-steroids, commonly used to treat Asthma)
- Rheumatoid arthritis, ceoliac disease, overactive thyroid, chronic liver or kidney disease
- Late menstrual cycle onset or women who haven’t had children
- Irregular menstrual cycle, or period stopped 6 - 12 months ago (excluding pregnancy), early menopause or post-menopausal women
- Men suffering impotence or lack of libido
- Lack of calcium in the diet
- An inactive lifestyle or low physical activity over many years
- Smoking
- Consuming excessive amounts of alcohol
- Vitamin D deficiency or lack of exposure to sunlight
- Excessive salt, protein or caffeine (more than six cups of tea or coffee per day) consumption
- Elderly people who are institutionalised or live in hostel accommodation
