When you have osteoporosis, you should pay particular attention to what you eat, as nutrition is a key factor in regaining strong bones and keeping them healthy. Eating a wide variety of fresh foods including proteins (lean meats, liver, cold water fish), dairy and leafy green vegetables and grains. Limit foods which take calcium away from bones such as alcohol, salt, and caffeine. If you have a calcium deficiency, your health care team or doctor will tell you exactly how much calcium you need to correct the problem. It is then important to maintain the recommended daily levels calcium. For more information about the recommended daily intake (RDI) refer to the Essential Nutrition for Osteoporosis section. Building your bone strength and density by choosing foods rich in calcium, magnesium, and Vitamin D, all essential for healthy bones. Calcium rich foods include low fat dairy products with fortified soy milks an alternative. Eat low fat cheese in moderation and limit ice cream and cottage cheese because their calcium levels aren’t as high as other dairy products unless they are calcium enriched. |
