Treatment of ovarian cancerAfter the diagnosis, the type and the stage of cancer is identified. Your doctor may recommend one or more treatment options. It is up to you to choose which option you want to go with. It is important to take your time and consider all the options carefully before making any decisions. If you have anything that you do not understand, you should clarify them with your doctor and/or your cancer care team.
Treatment options depend largely on the stage and type of your cancer. If you do not have surgery as your first treatment, the doctors may not be able to identify the exact stage. If this is the case, your treatment then is based on other available information.
Your general state of health, such as your age, your plan to have children, and other personal considerations may also play an important part in choosing your treatment.
There are three main treatments for ovarian cancer. Surgery is the primary treatment, which is used to remove the cancer cells from the ovary and other related sites. Chemotherapy is the second treatment, which uses medications to destroy the cancer cells. The other form of treatment is radiotherapy, which uses the radiation to kill cancer cells.
Remember, it is important for you to make sure that you understand all the risks and side effects of all the above treatments before making a decision about your treatment.
