High cholesterol won’t make you feel sick and rarely there’ll be any sign of something being wrong.

Some medical conditions- atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease, stroke or inflammation of the pancreas are made worse by high cholesterol and often the first sign of high cholesterol is a heart attack, angina or stroke.

Sometimes in people with lipid disorders (familial hypercholesterolemia) have extremely high cholesterol which causes fat deposits or soft yellow skin growths (xanthomas) under the skin, often around the eyes but they can be located anywhere on the body. Often they will be the size of a pin head, in clusters or look like small bumps. Sometimes they form in tendons or can be felt by a doctor during an examination if the liver or spleen are enlarged. There will be abdominal pain if pancreatitis develops.

Men can also suffer impotence as arteries harden, slowing blood flow.

The only way to know if your cholesterol levels are high is to have your blood tested regularly.
