There is no one diet for diabetes, but follow nutrition guidelines in the Food Pyramid and watch carbohydrate intake.
People with diabetes can eat the same foods the family enjoys and healthy meals will benefit everyone.
A good meal plan should fit in with your routine, eating habits, medications and other health issues and will help keep you on track to lose and maintain an ideal weight, lower blood pressure, cholesterol and improve blood glucose.
There are many ways to organise and personalise a meal plan to suit you but take into account your own food goals.
It can be overwhelming if you’ve never had to watch what you eat before so start reading labels and food information and take notice of what happens to your body when you eat different foods.
Meal Plans: Chat to your doctor or dietician about the Food Guide Pyramid, Rating Your Plate, Exchange Lists, Building and Balancing and Carbohydrate Counting just to name a few. They are all different but one will work well for you.
- Watch portion sizes and choose from each food group to provide the highest quality nutrients.
- Eat the same amount of food at the same time each day to keep blood sugar levels stable
Food goals: Not everyone needs to same thing from meal plans. For some cutting kilojoules is important or limiting fat and salt or increasing high fibre foods. |
