Signs & Symptoms

There are no distinctive signs or symptoms for obstructive and central sleep apneas. It is difficult for doctors to identify the type of apnea. Disruptive snoring may identify obstructive sleep apnea, while central sleep apnea is identified by awakening with shortness of breath.

The most common signs and symptoms of these two apneas are:

  • Excessive daytime sleepiness. This condition is also known as hypersomnia
  • Loud snoring
  • Choking or gasping during sleep to get air into the lung
  • Social problems, difficult to relate to other people
  • Emotional problems, this symptom effects emotions that may lead to depression and anxiety
  • Frequent waking during sleep
  • Shortness of breath when sleeping
  • Experiencing a dry month or shore throat
  • Headache
  • Difficult to stay asleep or experience insomnia
  • Trouble concentrating and staying awake during the day
