A stroke may be major and sudden. But in some cases it's mild and may be barely discernible. Sometimes a person may completely recover.

Sometimes a person may have a 'mini stroke' and completely recover. A mini stroke which lasts less than 24 hours and is fully reversible is called a 'Transient Ischaemic Attack', or TIA. It's important that someone who is getting episodes of TIA see their doctor, because treatment can prevent a subsequent full-blown stroke.
