There are certain steps that will significantly lessen your chances of getting atherosclerosis and the risk of a stroke. If you have had a stroke or TIA, take any medications prescribed by your doctor.

Don’t smoke (this is very important!).

Have regular check ups with your doctor to make sure your blood pressure is controlled and you are tested for diabetes and blood cholesterol.

Lose weight, or don't put it on. You can do this by eating a diet that is low in sugar and low in fats and that has little or no processed and manufactured food; and by exercising regularly. Thirty minutes of exercise such as swimming running, walking briskly or a gym work-out is recommend at least three to four times a week.

Don’t drink alcohol to excess.

If you’re over 35, female, and on the oral contraceptive pill, talk to your doctor about alternative means of contraception.
